5 Tips To Reset And Rework Your Home

Now that the school year is in full swing, it’s a great time to reset and rework your routines at home.  With the early mornings, packed afternoons, and piles of school gear now part of daily life again, a little organization can create a space that supports everyone’s success. And that’s an “A+” in our book.

Try incorporating one or more of these ideas.

Designate a Drop Zone

Backpacks, shoes, lunchboxes, and jackets need a home—preferably not scattered across the kitchen floor. Set up a functional drop zone near your entryway or mudroom with hooks, bins, or cubbies. A small bench adds a spot to sit while getting shoes on, and labeling baskets can help keep everyone’s gear in order.

Set Up a Homework-Friendly Zone

Whether it’s a quiet corner, a desk in their room, or the dining table during designated hours, make sure your kids have a place to focus. Keep supplies like pencils, paper, and chargers nearby, and reduce distractions as much as possible. Bonus points for good lighting and a comfy chair!

Declutter Closets & Drawers

Getting dressed is way easier when everything fits and is easy to find. Sort through clothes, shoes, and accessories, and donate what no longer serves. You’ll save time in the morning and make room for new school-year essentials. A closet organizer or simple labeled bins can work wonders.

Streamline School-Day Meals

Mornings and evenings run smoother when the kitchen is prepped. Stock up on grab-and-go breakfast options, pre-packed snacks, and lunchbox staples. A dedicated bin in the fridge or pantry can make it easier for kids to help themselves and build some independence into your routine.

Start a Weekly Family Command Center

A big calendar, a chalkboard wall, or even a shared app—whatever works best for your crew, the goal is simple: keep everyone on the same page. Note down school events, practice schedules, assignments, and appointments so you can plan ahead and avoid last-minute surprises.

BONUS TIPS:

Keep It Real-Base your setup on your family’s actual schedule—not just the ideal one. Focus on what needs tracking daily.

Color-Code or Icon-Tag-Assign each person a color or symbol for quick clarity. Great for kids and visual learners.

Make It a Sunday Thing-Spend 10 minutes together each Sunday to update the board. It sets the tone and gets everyone on the same page.
