Decorating Your Home on a Budget

Decorating Your Home on a Budget

Do you want to give your home a fresh look but have to watch your budget? No need to fret. There are many ways to give your home a stellar look without spending a fortune.

Here are some ideas:

  • Wield the power of the paint
  • Painting is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to transform your interior. Consider painting an accent wall, or giving the entire home a fresh coat.

Choose the color that will convey the feel you want – soft hues for a muted look, or bright shades to make the rooms come alive. Or, you can go with classic white, gray or other neutral colors – these are recommended if you’re planning to sell your home in the future and want to appeal to as many buyers as possible.

  • Add artworks
  • Transform your walls into a personal gallery by hanging works of art. Choose artworks that reflect your style and personality. Or use family photographs or your very own pieces to add a personal touch. Make sure they’re the right size for the wall and use the proper hanging method. If you’re adding more than one piece, plan where each one will go.

  • Liven up the room with pillows
  • Pillows are great accessories that can help set the mood for a room. Replace worn and tired-looking pillows with new, fuller ones. Choose pillow covers that will complement your interior, and plan groupings. You can mix and match patterns with the same color schemes, or plain and patterned designs. Mix up the sizes as well for a more vibrant look.

  • Accent with area rugs
  • Area rugs are a great way to add character and make a statement in a room. You can find inexpensive pieces in home improvement centers, discount home shops, and similar places. Choose one that complements your interior and your design aesthetic.

You may opt to layer various rugs to create a unique look. Ideally, all furniture in the group should sit on the rug with an ample area of the flooring visible around the rug.

  • Create a focal point
  • If a room has an interesting architectural feature, such as a fireplace or a bay window, make it a focal point by strategically arranging furniture, artwork, and décor around it.

If the room does not have a built-in attention-grabbing feature, create one. Group furniture around a TV console table or a bookshelf, and add accents like mirrors, plants, décor or artwork.

  • Update your window treatments
  • Giving your windows a fresh look can transform the room dramatically without costing a fortune. Add store-bought curtain panels with interesting patterns and colors you’ve never tried before.

For a lower-cost option, add iron-on trims, tassels and other DIY embellishments to white drapes. Or get artistic and spray paint your own design using a stencil. You may apply some of the same tricks on vinyl roller shades. You might even want to try your hand at making your own Roman shades.

  • Scour flea markets and garage sales
  • You’ll be amazed at the amazing finds in flea markets or garage and estate sales. Keep tabs on when they’re happening and be there early to catch the best stuff. Keep your eyes open for items with plenty of design potential for your home.
