Northumberland County lies on the Chesapeake Bay, along numerous creeks and is across from the Potomac River in Maryland. The area was occupied at the time of English settlement by the Algonquian-speaking historic tribes and settlement began in this area of the Northern Neck around 1635. There is a rich maritime history, charming small towns, fishing and miles of coastline to explore.
