Nelson County was named after Thomas Nelson, a Governor of Virginia in the 1700’s. Nelson County is part of the Charlottesville, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area and is 75 miles northeast of Richmond.The county’s mountainous terrain offers vistas of the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains and the beautiful George Washington National Forest, with the James River forming the southeast boundary. Within this bounty of natural beauty are miles of hiking trails, skiing trails, crystal-clear fishing streams, historic family farms and orchards, picturesque vineyards, inviting tap rooms and unparalleled views.
There are abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation available in all parts of the county. These options include hiking along the Appalachian Trail or to the top of Crabtree Falls (the highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River) and excellent canoeing and fishing. Wintergreen Resort is a four season resort with many amenities. For the golfer, there are two golf courses: a mountain course (Devil’s Knob – residents & guests only) and a valley course (Stoney Creek). The lodging establishments in the county are primarily bed and breakfasts, or mountain cabins, locally-owned and operated. The restaurants and dining options offer a variety of foods with many offering Virginia grown products and are also locally-owned and operated.
